Music Review: Wale – More About Nothing (Mixtape)

Posted by Okla Jones on August 19, 2010

It’s both a burden and an honor to be the representative of an entire group of people. It’s considered a position of power… but with great power, comes great responsibility. Olubowale Folarin, more commonly known as Wale, is the first real hip-hop artist to make it out of the trenches of Washington, D.C. His metaphors, wordplay and rhyme scheme is something that he can honestly call his own, which is atypical of most rappers today. Ever since being nominated for XXL‘s ’09 class of the Freshman 10, he has not only been on a serious grind, but has remained consistent every step of the way. On August 3rd, in collaboration with Roc Nation x DJ Omega x The Board Administration, he released the sequel to his Mixtape About Nothing, aptly titled: More About Nothing. “I Don’t Even Wanna Interfere With The Music…”

Posted by J. Tinsley on May 13, 2010

“I continue to strive, to the demise/ But I’ma need you for this ride/ My letter to God…”

For as long as I can remember, Young Chris has always been one of those artists who never got the break he truly deserved. Sure, the Young Gunz era was a good look for an introduction. However, after the entire Rocafella debacle, it seems as if people forgot about Chris. He has remained focused on his music releasing quality tracks and compilations (see The Project) and managed to stay on my radar for years.

Now, if he ever gets the credits he deserves is not for me to speculate. He is still young and hasn’t lost a step lyrically. Anyway, my people over at TSS recently let go of this new Young Chris track where he borrowed Wale’s “Letter.” First off, I am not Wale’s biggest fan, but this may be one of my favorite songs from the guy. An incredibly introspective record speaking to Barack Obama and Tupac? Yeah, that could only turn out good. And having John Mayer adding some soul to the track? Oh, that’s a win-win. (Keep reading…)

Wale – “Pretty Girls (Remix)” x “I’m Ill” (by J. Tinsley)

Posted by T. Adeyemi on April 16, 2010

Managing to keep his head above water amidst the “lack of diversity” in his latest visual, Mr. Folarin did his part to breath new air into the record by inviting Chris Brown and Fabolous to the remix. Batting after C.B., Wale delivers an impressive (new) verse of his own filled with Twitter and sorority references. Loso takes a break from his “Funeral Fab” character to return to blessing remixes with witty 16’s. Read the rest of this entry »

Wale Faces Criticism Over New Video, “Pretty Girls” (J. Tinsley)

Posted by T. Adeyemi on February 10, 2010

Vodpod videos no longer available.

It doesn’t take much to get the Twitter gossip wheels in motion. Such was the case with Wale’s newest video, “Pretty Girls,” sans Gucci Mane. The newest single from his debut album, Attention Deficit, was conjuring remarks that date back to as far as the Willie Lynch Theory itself. Dark skin vs. light skin. Pretty vs. ugly. And one of underlying themes from the classic movie, “School Daze.”

The majority of the debate swirled diversity, or lack thereof, of young ladies in the video (some even question the quality of their appearance). While backlash from the video was clearly evident, Wale, himself, defended his newest visual. Read the rest of this entry »

Wale – My Sweetie (Embracing His Roots)

Posted by Mr. Put On on August 18, 2009

So maybe it’s because both my parents are Nigerian and I grew up with a decent knowledge of African music or because my mother (R.I.P) used to sing this sample when I was younger; but this is all I’ve been listening to for the last 15 hours or so. I think it’ll probably stay like this for the next two days. Now don’t get it twisted, this is a universal song that can reach anybody regardless of their heritage in the same way Michael Jackson’s “Mama Say” did.

Big-ups to Wale for the Nigerian reference in the song. This man embraces his roots, and I’m proud to be a fan. Apple Juice Kid went in on the production too, this joint rock. This comes out of left field as a sample, but its great, catchy, and will be bridging generational gaps where we see many American born Africans assimilating with urban america culture and forgetting their heritage. Wale does a good job at bringing the unity. Now I can play my music in the car with my pops, thanks Wale.
