The NBA’s Most Influential Missed Opportunities

Posted by J. Tinsley on October 29, 2010

Positive or negative, nothing about the past can be altered.

That’s what’s peculiar about nostalgia. Regardless of what happens, the question of the unknown always lingers. Rarely does this happen anywhere more often than with sports. In an environment that thrives on the never-ending wheeling and dealings of trades, releases and free agency, complacency will never assume itself as characteristic familiar with those who call themselves “fans.” The NBA is a league which creates dynasties as quickly as it destroys them, so the mere impact of one decision can effectively make or break a franchise.

But what about the aborted decisions? À la Pau Gasol to Cleveland in early ’07 or Durant to Portland #1 overall. The ones which never spawned into reality, and the ones that don’t even seem reasonable given the way the following sequence of events played out. Over the past twenty years, Michael Jordan and Kobe Bryant have arguably been the sport’s most competitive forces. They have combined for 11 championships, six regular season MVP’s, eight Finals MVP’s, 26 All Star Game appearances and countless number of game winners. Yeah, for the most part, history has treated the two favorably.

Basking in their glory is fine, but wondering “what if?” is even better. Jadakiss even made a song about it. You see, His Airness – through the unintentional influence of Scottie Pippen – and The Mamba were involved in quite possibly the two greatest missed opportunities in NBA recent memory. If Kobe And LeBron Played One-On-One

Posted by J. Tinsley on October 5, 2010

As a LeBron James fan, it’s been a rough summer. The critics, the analysis, the Comic Sans font, the old heads. Pretty much, the guy has seen his image go from Barack in ’08 to Kat Stacks in 2010 in one offseason. Throughout the summer, I’ve found myself in a countless number of debates defending LBJ and the fact he’s still arguably the best player on the planet. That’s about the time when the wolves come out in defense of Kobe Bryant. True #24 supporters are a different breed of fans, you see.

They know what it’s like to have their favorite player be “Public A*shole #1.” Read the rest of this entry »

Ron Artest’s Single “Champion” Video

Posted by T. Adeyemi on June 21, 2010

“Moment of silence for the Champions/For those who make going hard a lifestyle.”

Real Talk, Ron Ron isn’t half bad at this rapping thing. Now before you go straight to the comments and rip me a new one for saying that let me explain myself. Two reasons make this song actually pretty credible.

1) For starters Artest took his time in making this track. According to him he recorded this track last June after signing with the Lakers.

2) The track has a solid beat behind it and the hook (by an unnamed source) actually makes sense and sounds good. Read the rest of this entry »

Lakers Go Back 2 Back, How Could You Hate That?

Posted by T. Adeyemi on June 18, 2010

I'm Self Entitling This Picture - "I see YOU Hating, Cause YOU MAD!"

If you didn’t see this post coming, then you truly haven’t been visiting the site consistently enough over the months. To my closest friends, they saw this post coming almost win or lose; as I have continued to be a die-hard Lakers fan even after the heartbreak of losing to the Boston Celtics in 2008. But that’s the past. And if there is one thing I have learned over by sub 25 years of living, it’s that we, “Tend to forget the past, Only concern ourselves with the present, and Hope instead of plan for the future.” Feel free to quote me there. Anyway, as the old gospel hymn goes,

This is the day, This is the day
That the LORD has made, that the LORD has made
I will rejoice, I will rejoice
And be glad in it, glad in it

With that being said, I plan on taking those words to heart and rejoicing not only today but throughout the offseason about the Lakers 2010 NBA Championship. How could you not celebrate an event like this? Why would you hate this moment? This is a time to be positive and ignore any negative energy that some may have about what happened last night. Let me tell you why. Read the rest of this entry »

Well like I predicted from game 1 there will be a game 7 on Thursday to determine the NBA champions. This is like a blue Moon in the NBA finals most teams take the crown in 6 but only few have went the whole distance. I guess this would fit a series like this, a game 7 for a rivalry like the Celtics and Lakers the most storybook franchises in NBA history. The number 7 symbolizes the meaning completion great number for this series. Will Kobe Bryant complete his task to  become the best Laker to put on a jersey or even better complete his hand full of rings? Will the Celtics starting 5 from 2008 complete another season with a championship?  Well we wont know till Thursday who will win the championship but just know it will be a great game to watch.

“Kobe?… Lebron?…”

Posted by Okla Jones on February 3, 2010

“I used to play Kobe, now I play Lebron…”Young Jeezy

The current NBA season has been remarkable for both of the men previously stated. With Lebron and Kobe’s squads having the best records in the league (respectively), both men are blazing paths to becoming two of the greatest players that the National Basketball Association has ever produced. James is the most athletically gifted player to ever lace a pair of sneakers, but KB’s drive and determination is only surpassed by “His Airness”. The mammoth of a marketing scheme designed by the people at Nike has drawn even more attention to the healthy competition of the Black Mamba and The King, but the real question in everyone’s mind is: “Who is truly the better basketball player?”

Now, in terms of accolades, championships and success in clutch situations, Kobe definitely puts himself on the top of the list. But now that age slowly creeps up on this future Hall of Famer, when it’s all said an done, will Lebron emerge as the better of the two? The savior of Cleveland is only 25 years of age, with an entire career ahead of him and for the past few seasons, the Eastern Conference is not what it used to be. After the Black Mamba dons the #24 jersey for the final time, will that championship trophy that has eluded LBJ be his for the taking for years to come. Read the rest of this entry »

I remember the days…

Posted by Okla Jones on December 23, 2009

I finally got a chance to view the entire Allen Iverson interview in which he was being welcomed back to his rightful home of Philadelphia. Trust me, I’m not an emotional guy, but in listening to A.I. speak, it really had me thinking… “Allen isn’t that young guard out of Georgetown anymore.” Age is something that catches up to all of us at one point or another.

June 26, 1996 will be a day that will forever have a place in my heart. That year’s NBA draft class will always be something to remember…

In dwelling back, I was about nine years old; and my father let me stay up later than usual so I could watch “history in the making” as he so aptly stated. It’s hard to believe that June ’96 was almost 14 years ago. While many of these players are reaching the age of retirement (with the exception of #24), it really just puts everything into perspective, you know? As one generation of legends take their last hoorah within the coming years, they’ve definitely paved the way for the NBA’s future stars.

Just a Recap:
Finals MVP
4 Reg. Season MVP’s
4 All-Star Game MVP’s
5 Defensive POY Awards
14 All-NBA Def. 1st Team
18 All-NBA 1st Team
57 All-Star Selections

Thanks for the memories guys; even though I know that it’s not over yet…

Lil' Wayne x Kobe Bryant @ VIBE Photo Shoot

Posted by J. Tinsley on July 8, 2009

As the late-Notorious B.I.G. waxes poetics in the background, Lil’ Wayne and his hardcourt counterpart, Kobe Bryant, take a few pics which would have been seen in VIBE‘s September 2009 issue.

In related news, Weezy’s confession about Kobe’s words of wisdom on the set proved what I had originally thought for years.
