“Ready For Tipoff” – Interview With Def Jam’s Khalil

Posted by J. Tinsley on October 26, 2010

Signed to the house Russell and Rick built, Def Jam’s newest talent Khalil is poised to deliver on the investment. His debut album Hot Like Summer, which is set to drop in early 2011 has already attracted the lines of Rico Love and Jim Jonsin while securing features from everyone like Young Money’s Lil Twist to the head Diplomat himself, Cam’ron.

While sitting in the office making changes to his office website, the 15-year-old West Coast born (California) and East Coast bred (North Carolina) singer opened up about how he became close friends with Diggy Simmons and Lil Twist, the recent “younger artist boom,” the one record he cannot wait for people to hear and if he could beat Cam’ron in basketball one-one-one. Catalog Catch Up: Big K.R.I.T. – “Exhibit K” (by J. Tinsley)

Posted by T. Adeyemi on June 21, 2010

Technically, this isn’t a “catch up” because it’s only been out for a few days. I still believe it deserves its own post for two reasons, however:

1) Big K.R.I.T. is nice. Not simply “fly by night nice,” but like “the real deal nice.” If you haven’t downloaded K.R.I.T. Wuz Here yet, stop cheating yourself and do so.

2) This may be the third “Exhibit C” remake I’ve listened to out of the hundreds which have surfaced.

In case you’ve been living under a rock for the past few months, K.R.I.T. has risen from relative unknown from the crooked letter state (Mississippi) to one of the most talked about “new” rhyme slayers in the game. The guy actually talks about some real topics, too. Immersing yourself in his music, you’ll see his constant battles with everything from family issues to his own spirituality. The stuff most people deal with on a daily basis. Read the rest of this entry »

Left Foot

Posted by servontaym on April 6, 2010

First Big Boi album Sir Lucious Left Foot gets picked up by Def Jam. So then his album of course is pushed back from the original date. But this might have been a good push back for more time for even better music. Yesterday, afternoon he released a song off the album called Shutterbug . After listening to this song I wanted the album to come out today rather than a sub par artist try to push their album today. With Big Boi now making all this music solo for the upcoming project it makes you think where is his other half better half Andre 3k. One of the hottest lyricist from the game must be prepared to drop some heat or really has gone to Stankonia.

Ludacris “How Low” Video – Still No Release Date on New Album

Posted by T. Adeyemi on January 22, 2010

Guess Who’s Back? Ludacris seems to have the formula figured out in terms of how often to drop a new album, and when to show up on a few remixes. Other than that Luda keeps a low profile if he’s not promoting his budding acting career. “How Low” is Mr. Bridges first single off of his 7th album. (Kudos to YOU Sir) Nowadays, I can’t say that there is more than 5 rappers who I would put my money on to make it to seven major label albums. But against some odds, Ludacris has made it thus far and is now ready to release Battle of the Sexes. Read the rest of this entry »

So apparently Fab is really going through with the whole movie/album package. While it remains to be seen if it will top Cam’s effort with Killa Season in 2006, the musical side of Fab interests me more than the thespian side (that’s acting, people). The “It’s My Time” video, which doesn’t feature a cameo from Jeremiah, but does with Ryan Leslie, is basically a trailer for the upcoming movie.

Loso in the jersey FTW (pause). Brings me back to the days when I used to wear jerseys. My favorite? The High School All-American LeBron James #32 jersey. Hit the jump for the Fab and The-Dream visual.

"Birthday Sex" in RawSession

Posted by T. Adeyemi on May 26, 2009

If you haven’t heard the smooth and seductive track “Birthday Sex” by now, then you clearly are out of the loop musically. Although, you may have not seen or heard from its 21-year old writer and singer outside of this one track. Jeremih, who is from south-side Chicago is the newest edition to Def Jam’s roster.

To be perfectly honest, I thought Jay had left Def Jam a long time ago. The past 48 hours have been buzzing, however, with rumors of Mr. Carter dropping five million dead presidents (pun intended) to buyout his contract and take his long anticipated Blueprint 3 with him to Roc Nation.

Hov and the Yellow One recently spoke and it’s official, Jay-Z is no longer Def Jam.

Quite frankly, I’ve always said this song should have been taken off the album and added with “Cigar Music”. But what do I know? (Keep reading…)

Whenever it’s an R&B song and the words “remix” and “Fabolous” are involved, you can pretty much bet the bank that it’s going to amount for a good listen.  For months, Chicago’s latest R&B sensation, Jeremih, has been garnering quite the buzz with his seductive banger, “Birthday Sex”. In all truthfulness, this is the record that got him his deal with Def Jam and in turn opened up the doors for him to meet Fabolous. In the industry’s version of a “homeboy” deal, in return for appearing on Fab’s official first single, Loso returned the favor and jumped on the remix to the aforementioned “Birthday Sex”.

The rest, as they say, is history. On a side note, however, it’s about time this record leaked, even Fab’s been baffled about its whereabouts recently.

When Def Jam pulled a surprise move and leaked the Fab and The-Dream record, “Throw It In The Bag”, a little over a month ago, something just didn’t sound right about the record. Turns out I was right. Sometime yesterday, Loso let loose of the mixed and mastered version and the end result is a much better sounding record. Patience IS a virtue, it turns out.

As a bonus, here is Loso’s first single of the album, Loso’s Way, featuring newly signed Def Jam R&B artist, Mr. “Birthday Sex” himself, Jeremih.
