TGIF “Thank GOD I Can Flashback” – Groove Theory

Posted by T. Adeyemi on January 29, 2010

Real quick, just take a few minutes to vibe with me on this one. As you’re playing video feel free to sway a little bit in your chair. Can you feel it? Yeah, you can feel the groove. The music feels true, almost as if it wasn’t made to invoke any other response but a smooth headnod and a gentle two-step. Don’t be ashamed if you’ve already started snapping your fingers. That response simply signifies that you have entered the Groove Theory.

This R&B/Rap duo can be defined as the defintion of one hit wonders, but what’s lost in that label is the one time that they provided the world with timeless music. On a Friday afternoon riding home from work, while you’re contemplating your late night move they provide the perfect transition. The group’s only true single “Tell Me” is set at just the right tempo to assist with unwinding. As their name states, the groove is naturally solicited as you listen to the soothing vocals.

TGIF “Thank GOD I Can Flashback” – Johnny Kemp

Posted by T. Adeyemi on January 22, 2010

One of the best feelings as a music conqueror is having a song that perfectly fits your mood. Friday’s always seem to go either one or two ways. For most people Friday’s end up being their most strenuous day of the work week. Simply because they work so furiously to cram as much work in as possible before 5 on Friday, just so they can leave the office as early as possible. For others Friday’s have become the host day for office parties & more socializing, where no work is done after noontime. However, there’s one crucial aspect of Friday’s that everybody enjoys, PAY DAY.

Everyone knows the feeling of watching the clock as the last hour of your shift comes to a close on a pay day Friday, your only goal is to get to the bank to cash your check. Or is you’re smart you’ve already called the bank to hear your balance because you know your direct deposit came in around 2 AM this morning. However, you receive your money, the feeling is still just as immense. That feeling sometimes can make you want to scream out loud, or even sing a song. And that song sounds something like, “Just Got Paid…Friday Night…Party Hoppin’…Feeling Right.”

TGIF “Thank GOD I Can Flashback” – Teddy Pendergrass

Posted by T. Adeyemi on January 15, 2010

Well, it is the end of the work week and I saw it fitting to bring back a weekly series that I started over a year ago. First, let me thank LiadPutUOn for the continued push to bring back my “TGIF Flashback” series. If you don’t remember what the Friday Flashback is all about, let me quickly give you a reminder.

My purpose in doing this series is to highlight and wipe the dust off of a few old records that may or may not have been major hits when they debuted, but nonetheless they fit my definition of “good music.” Now unlike a lot of the other sites or T.V. shows that have flashback joints, I plan on reaching back to a song that is definitely older than anything you’ve got stashed away in your freezer that you’ll probably never use. So here’s my rules:

1) Its got to be an R&B track. My Love for Hip Hop runs deep, but R&B has always been my first love since my mother used to play her favorite tracks on Saturday mornings while we were cleaning the house. Plus, there’s just something about the feeling you get when you rediscover a throwback ballad or an uptempo dance track that Hip Hop music can only envy.

2) As I stated before I plan on reaching WAY back, not the ’60’s but definitely not any songs you’ve seen on MTV Jams lately. With that in mind, the song has to be AT LEAST 7 years old. Besides, truthfully speaking music as a whole was fuller, more powerful, and moved your soul in a way in which most music these days just can’t compare.

3) Lastly, the song CANNOT be deemed a “Flashback” if it still plays as part of the early club rotation on Friday & Saturday nights. Shout Out to my favorite Dj, DjTayJames for teaching me the science of rocking a party.

So those are my rules. If you think there should be additions or subtractions let me know. Leave a comment, email me, or shamelessly once again I beg to lead you my people, if you would oh so graciously FOLLOW ME.

TGIF “Thank GOD I Can Flashback”: Tevin Campbell

Posted by T. Adeyemi on July 3, 2009

In writing my assessment of the BET Awards from last Sunday I realized after the fact that I definitely forgot to name a few people. Especially, someone who was part of arguably the best segment of the show. A name that is very familiar to me since I have a friend who resembles him (according to a certain group of 17 young scholars) I could not allow the unexpected appearance of one of my childhood favorites go unrecognized. I can still remember being hormone driven and “feeling myself”, I guess my swag back in middle school singing “Can We Talk” on 13 year old girls home answer machines. Believe me, I know I was wild.

“Can We Talk” happens to be one of the songs that solidified Tevin Campbell as one of the select few child prodigies to have made the difficult transition to adult star. The Waxahachie, Texas native first appeared on the scene debuting on the legendary Quincy Jones “Back on the Block” album. The success of the album was credited highly to the first single which featured a 12 year old Campbell on “Tomorrow (A Better You Better Me).” The single eventually rose to the number 1 spot on the Billboard charts, certifying that Campbell was a child star.

Young Tevin’s fan base steadily grew as he matured through puberty. His first single “Round and Round” was written & produced by the symbol also known as Prince. Following the success of his second Top 10 single Campbell propelled the level of his popularity to superstar status with the release of his debut album “T.E.V.I.N.” Campbell’s 1991 debut opened everyone’s eyes to the young R&B vocalist. The album supplied two number 1 hits with “Tell Me What You Want Me To Do” and “Alone With You.” The album easily went platinum, adding another top ten 5 single with “Goodbye.”

TGIF "Thank GOD I Can Flashback": Milestone

Posted by T. Adeyemi on July 3, 2009

Many times as a connoisseur of R&B music I find myself gravitating towards the hits of yesteryear. Not to say I don’t equally enjoy the sounds of newer artists like that of my current favorite R&B singer Trey Songz and newcomer Jeremih, but there’s just something about the more soulful sounds that keep lasting fans. In that mindset, I randomly from time to time open up my iTunes 90’s R&B playlist that I know will remind me of the way the smoothness of rhythm is supposed to meet the soulfulness of Blues. Looking no further than the third song on my list I instantly pressed repeat on the only hit from a superstar group named Milestone.

Milestone formulated of the super duo of brothers K-Ci & Jo Jo, and the 3 brothers named Edmonds surely made their presence known with the song “I Care About You.” This Friday Flashback is unique is that sense, a group comprised of several different saw success with their ONLY release to date. With songs like this the “Soul Food” movie soundtrack became much more than just an accessory to the very successful movie. Music genius Babyface who produced the movie with his wife ex-wife Tracy also orchestrated the assembling of the group Milestone.

TGIF "Thank GOD I Can Flashback": Tatyana Ali

Posted by T. Adeyemi on June 20, 2009

Yet again we find ourselves embarking upon another Friday. Friday,  the day that everyone looks forward to right? Well, the answer would be yes if the weather would cooperate. But when the weatherman says Friday is his “pick of the week” simply because its the only day in his 5-day forecast where he can show the sun; then it kind of takes away the essence of all that Friday embodies. Nevertheless, Friday still does signify the end of some people’s work weeks and I know some will already have their minds on somewhere/anywhere outside of their workplace. But until the clock strikes 5pm all there is left to do for many, it to Daydream.

As a kid growing up in the early 90’s and then maturing through this decade there’s been a few things I’ve never lost site of.

1. I would go to college

2. That I would become the starting running back for the Dallas Cowboys.

3. That I would marry one of the many dimepieces that graced the set of The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air.

TGIF "Thank GOD I Can Flashback": Kelly Price

Posted by T. Adeyemi on June 12, 2009

It is Friday once again, and I must admit this week has been an up & down rollercoaster of emotions and events. For me, this has been the kind of week that makes you look forward to that chance to have some time to yourself just to sit and breathe. Yet, in the midst of my hastiness to have this week come to an abrupt end it seemed like Friday would not come fast enough. However, in times like this I would have to say I can’t help but tip my cap to M.I.M.S. when I too say, Music Is My Savior.

Once again, Thank You for the emails, texts, and tweets giving suggestions on what artist or song should be the focus of this week’s Friday flashback. But after last week’s re-emergence of Mr. Biggs it seemed only fitting that I highlight someone who he assisted in jumpstarting their career. Someone who embodies the soul of a woman, one Ms. Kelly Price.

TGIF "Thank GOD I Can Flashback:" Mr. Biggs

Posted by T. Adeyemi on June 5, 2009

Once Again it is Friday and we are blessed with another opportunity to TGIF, “Thank GOD I Can Flashback.” If you’ve been keeping up with the site (which I hope you have) these past couple weeks then you’ve enjoyed the sounds of Mista & Soul IV Real. First, let me say that I appreciate all the emails and text messages I received giving suggestions on who I should highlight in the coming weeks. However, let me remind everyone of my guidelines to this Flashback thing.

1) R&B Songs ONLY! I Love Hip Hop Too, but there’s something about uncovering some throwback ballads or uptempo dance tracks that brings me a feeling that Rap could only envy.

2) The song has to be AT LEAST 7 years old. I’m sorry, but contrary to what they do over there at 106 & Park and their “Throwback” joints of the day. We’re actually going to dig into our archives of thousands of songs of damn good music.

3) Also, a song CANNOT be a “Flashback” if it is still in the early club rotation on Friday & Saturday nights. After 5 years of being surrounded by Dj’s I know that “Touch Me, Tease Me” is part of any good Dj’s warm-up mix. But just because its over 7 years old doesn’t mean its forgotten, which does not enable us to “look back” upon it.

Now, those are my rules. If you think there should be additions or subtractions let me know. Leave a comment, email me, or shamelessly once again I beg to lead you my people, if you would oh so graciously FOLLOW ME.

Now that we’ve gotten that cleared up for the last time, I hope. Does anybody remember one of the originators of “Baby Makin'” music, a smooth criminal in his own right (no pun intended), a true ladies man, a provider, a deceiver, heart breaker (LOL)….Mr. Biggs? Don’t Worry Nobody Has to Know

TGIF "Thank GOD I Can Flashback": Soul For Real

Posted by T. Adeyemi on May 29, 2009

TGIF…I know for most people your immediate thought is, “Thank God its Friday.” However, if you’ve been following the site for at least a week now, then you would have noticed a new weekly series I began this time last week. Every Friday I “TGIF” and flashback to an R&B hit from at least seven years ago. Yes people! A song cannot be constituted as a flashback if it is still being played in the early rotation at a club, or if you can simply remember every word to the song the moment the song comes on; I don’t believe it is a flashback. At least those are my rules, and if you agree then Follow ME. (Sorry, I couldn’t help the shameless plug.)

This week’s flashback is dedicated to one of my All-Time favorite R&B groups that in the end only truly achieved moderate success. The song, “Every Little Thing I Do.” The group, Soul For Real. When R&B Was R&B
