The NBA’s Most Influential Missed Opportunities

Posted by J. Tinsley on October 29, 2010

Positive or negative, nothing about the past can be altered.

That’s what’s peculiar about nostalgia. Regardless of what happens, the question of the unknown always lingers. Rarely does this happen anywhere more often than with sports. In an environment that thrives on the never-ending wheeling and dealings of trades, releases and free agency, complacency will never assume itself as characteristic familiar with those who call themselves “fans.” The NBA is a league which creates dynasties as quickly as it destroys them, so the mere impact of one decision can effectively make or break a franchise.

But what about the aborted decisions? À la Pau Gasol to Cleveland in early ’07 or Durant to Portland #1 overall. The ones which never spawned into reality, and the ones that don’t even seem reasonable given the way the following sequence of events played out. Over the past twenty years, Michael Jordan and Kobe Bryant have arguably been the sport’s most competitive forces. They have combined for 11 championships, six regular season MVP’s, eight Finals MVP’s, 26 All Star Game appearances and countless number of game winners. Yeah, for the most part, history has treated the two favorably.

Basking in their glory is fine, but wondering “what if?” is even better. Jadakiss even made a song about it. You see, His Airness – through the unintentional influence of Scottie Pippen – and The Mamba were involved in quite possibly the two greatest missed opportunities in NBA recent memory. Your Daily Funk – “Let The Music Play”

Posted by J. Tinsley on September 7, 2010

Barry White was one of the few people to ever walk this Earth who could have taken Michelle from Barack and everything been cool. Come to think of it, he could done that to most any of us self-respecting males. The same way Biggie got love in the ’90s for being big, dark and laidback, Barry perfected that demeanor decades earlier.

Having hands down one of the best musical voices of all-time also means damn near everything he released was an entry way into the bedroom and all the theatrics that followed. Go ahead and ask any of your old heads about Barry White and how important he was to their generation and watch the twinkle in their eye light up the room. The other day, I was rummaging through some songs to email to my mother and I came across B.W.’s “Let The Music Play.” Read the rest of this entry »

Music Review: Wale – More About Nothing (Mixtape)

Posted by Okla Jones on August 19, 2010

It’s both a burden and an honor to be the representative of an entire group of people. It’s considered a position of power… but with great power, comes great responsibility. Olubowale Folarin, more commonly known as Wale, is the first real hip-hop artist to make it out of the trenches of Washington, D.C. His metaphors, wordplay and rhyme scheme is something that he can honestly call his own, which is atypical of most rappers today. Ever since being nominated for XXL‘s ’09 class of the Freshman 10, he has not only been on a serious grind, but has remained consistent every step of the way. On August 3rd, in collaboration with Roc Nation x DJ Omega x The Board Administration, he released the sequel to his Mixtape About Nothing, aptly titled: More About Nothing. New Music From The Diplomats – “Salute”

Posted by T. Adeyemi on June 26, 2010

Dip…Dip…Dip Set! Guess who’s back like cooked colc crack? Indeed it seems that Cam’ron was in the kitchen cooking up the raw, and the product still seems to feel just that good. The Dipset movement of the early to mid 2000’s has forever been etched in Hip Hop history. This is evident by the street anthems that still provide a heavy crowd response at any club night across the U.S. But furthermore the group has managed to continue to create buzz in a together but separate roundabout way. Now however, it seems the Dipset reunion is complete with the release of new music featuring all the original members.

After running this track back about 10 times you can’t help but mentally travel back a few years to the times where these dudes were at the top of the game. Now as four seasoned vets in the game they all bring a little bit different sound. Read the rest of this entry »

Shannon Brown Violates LAX Air Space

Posted by T. Adeyemi on June 16, 2010

Simply put, you’re seeing this post for only two reasons. One, because I’ve tried to stay humble and just let the series play out between the Lakers & the Celtics. But for some reason all of the “out of the closet” Boston Celtics fans will not let me live during each & every game. So as part of my vow to get even and shed my non bragging cloak of humbleness I was wearing, I had to post this as a highlight to just how great of a sight game 6 of the NBA Finals was last night.

Secondly, after pressing play and sitting through the well worth the wait of 30 seconds of ads you will soon see just how and where “Amazing Happens.” So come with me Lakers Nation as we take flight alongside Pilot Shannon Brown as he does a fly by Top Gun style without permission from the control tower. In the words of the homie Blake Kelly, “Airplanes are cool.” I agree, don’t you?

Eminem, Royce Da 5’9″, & Mr. Porter Freestyle on Tim Westwood TV

Posted by T. Adeyemi on June 14, 2010

Vodpod videos no longer available.

Freestyling…Yea remember that art form? I know it is hard to remember what a REAL freestyle actually consisted of. In today’s day and age its no secret that most artists go in the booth spit some written bars over someone’s else’s beat, possibly record it, master it, package it up and send it out to the public labeled as a “Freestyle.” Now despite my sub 30 years of living I have not forgotten what a true freestyle is supposed to sound and feel like. Thankfully, neither have a few other people. Read the rest of this entry »

“That Street Sh*t Will Buy You Some Sh*t You Wouldn’t Believe…”

Posted by J. Tinsley on May 5, 2010

Between Jeezy and Jada, their respective tapes mark the start of potentially insane summer. And that’s not even considering Cam and Vado’s new “Gangsta Grillz” set to drop any now.

The true rating behind Jeezy’s newest street scripture, Trap or Die II, is still weeks off. Sure people will run around either claiming it’s his best tape ever or his worst, but ask again in about two months – that’ll be your real answer. Seeing as how I held off from any leak other than the song with Plies, it was a refreshing listen all the way through in my book. Some songs stood out more than others, obviously, but it appears to be another quality release in Jeezy’s already respected resume’.

Going into the tape, one of the more anticipated was his collaboration with Virginia Cavaliers, Malice and Pusha T, otherwise known as Clipse. Given the lyrical track record of the three, it wasn’t difficult to guess what the song would center around. Coke, drugs and gunplay all cooked over a simmering instrumental. Thankfully, it was all that plus more. Spitting first, Jeezy wasted no time getting straight to the point. (Keep reading…)

Catalog Catch Up: Busta Rhymes feat. Eminem – “I’ll Hurt You (remix)” (by J. Tinsley)

Posted by T. Adeyemi on March 24, 2010

Chances are whenever I drop my debut mixtape, eastcoasttoyotacamrysunroofmuzik, and Eminem starts blowing up my phone for a guest feautre, I’m going to tell him no. I’ll never admit this to him, but I’d be scared as all hell to rap alongside this guy. For all the things people may say about him, one thing you can’t deny is that his flow is on some parallel universe, perfect stuff. It’s possible you may have heard a “wack” Eminem song once or twice in your day, but I can bet his flow was on point nonetheless.

That said, one of my favorite Eminem guest features was on the Busta Rhymes cut, “I’ll Hurt You (remix).” To Busta’s credit, he definitely held his own. But dude is legend, so I expected nothing less prior to listening. However, when it was time for Marshall to lyrically exercise, he more than lived up to the hype. His guest verse was so crazy that I couldn’t even type it correctly. I tried for about 15 minutes with no luck. My apologies. Read the rest of this entry »

“Run That Back…” Gudda Gudda feat. Lil Wayne – “I Don’t Like The Look”

Posted by J. Tinsley on March 20, 2010

It’s back to the money at the YM/CM offices even as the general gets ready to complete his second week in Rikers. Drake and Nicki Minaj are continuing to prep two of 2K10’s most anticipated albums and Gudda Gudda is readying his mixtape, Back 2 Guddaville. This Willy Wonka sampled track (yes, Willy Wonka), “I Don’t Like The Look,” is a tag team free for all with Wayne. Gudda holds his own and does his thing on the track, but it’s the boss who steals the show. (Keep reading…)
