Music Review: Vado – Slime Flu

Posted by Oak Jones on October 26, 2010

During the late 1920s through the early 1930s, Harlem, NYC was the mecca of the African-American universe. It was a cultural movement that consisted of an evolution of literature, art and music. So, anyone from that particular suburb of Manhattan knows what it means to be born and raised there. Since then, the musical mecca has shifted to almost every part of the nation at one point or another. In the 1970s a new art form was presented to the national stage, the genre that we have all come to know and love as hip-hop. It was not centered in Harlem specifically, but in the borough of the Bronx… but it was New York City nonetheless. As history shows us, about every 10-15 years, the rap spotlight shifts back to NYC, and in 2010 the man who many consider would be the one to “bring the Big Apple back” is Cam’Ron’s protégé and fellow Harlemite, Vado.

Upon giving the phrase “slime” national acclaim, on October 12, Vado released his highly anticipated Slime Flu project to the masses. Lyrically he isn’t the sharpest rapper to ever do it, but like artist such as Nas, DMX, and 50 Cent (just to name a few…) he brings a refreshing sound to the game, one that we haven’t heard in a few years. Skillz – “Celebrate Life”

Posted by J. Tinsley on October 18, 2010

A lot of cats fell to the game, and we all could’ve been like ‘Dark Skin Jermaine’…

It’s great that many know Skillz for his always anticipated year end lyrical synopsis. They’re dope. But, contrary to popular belief, he also has great songs that have nothing to do with the aforementioned concept. My fellow VA native has a project dropping next week entitled The World Needs More Skillz and “Celebrate Life” is the first look. Read the rest of this entry »

Well there’s not much to be said here, Lloyd has been annihilating every instrumental compilation he “lays” his vocals down on (pun intended). Having a December 2010 expected release of his next album King of Hearts Lloyd is already set to produce a spectacular album. On My Philly Sh*t x Young Chris – Philly Sh*t

Posted by Mr. Put On on October 18, 2010

It’s no secret that ever since I came back to the tri-state I’ve spent a large majority of time in Philly, partying, promoting, planning, hanging, etc. The culture of Philadelphia, as is the culture of any other major city in the world, has its own flavor and completely different feel. Most people think, “oh yeah, Philly” as though it’s just over there in PA, doing its own thing and when they get to it, they get to it. The important thing is, when they get to it…. Music Video: KiD Cudi Feat. Kanye & McLovin – “Erase Me”

Posted by T. Adeyemi on October 12, 2010

Jimmy Hendrix reincarnated seems to be the angle KiD Cudi was going for when he created the visual for “Erase Me.” For a song that sounds reminiscent of a previous era with the heavy guitar strings and steady bass line. The video helps to put the listener/viewer in the right mood. Everything from the sparkle drums, to the big hair so eloquently transpose the 60’s onto today’s generation.

Christopher Mintz-Plass aka McLovin’s appearance only helps to add that strangely cool feel to this video. The Miami Vicesque grainy picture adds to the ambiance. Read the rest of this entry »

Marsha Ambrosius And Her Ballad Of Hope

Posted by J. Tinsley on October 11, 2010

Realistically, Late Nights & Early Mornings is looking like it will not see the light of day until early 2011. Not totally surprising given the way projects and release dates very rarely see eye to eye in current times. Still, as long as Marsha continues to release quality music every so often, all is well.

Earlier this summer, Miss Ambrosius liberated her scorned anthem “I Hope She Cheats.” A few eyebrows were raised, some comments were said, yet overall most people consider it another quality notch on her catalog. Pending you follow her on Twitter, then you already know she’s been eagerly alluding to the ballad version of the record. For good reason, too.

I’ve always imagined Marsha as this singer you’d see in a dimly lit jazz lounge entertaining those in attendance who seek refuge from a rainstorm outside. “ Read the rest of this entry »
