Smokin’ Dro Week 8 – “Ric Flair”

Posted by J. Tinsley on October 28, 2010

Do you know what today is? It’s “Smokin’ Dro’s” eight week anniversary. Pending my first grade math is still sharp, eight weeks equates to two months which means a long-term relationship for those with a fear of commitment. As with any bond, however, arguments will happen. So what better way to tie it in than with one of Hip-Hop’s most unique wordsmiths and a song titled after one of sports and entertainment’s most iconic sh!t talkers. WOOOOO!

Skillz – “Celebrate Life”

Posted by J. Tinsley on October 18, 2010

A lot of cats fell to the game, and we all could’ve been like ‘Dark Skin Jermaine’…

It’s great that many know Skillz for his always anticipated year end lyrical synopsis. They’re dope. But, contrary to popular belief, he also has great songs that have nothing to do with the aforementioned concept. My fellow VA native has a project dropping next week entitled The World Needs More Skillz and “Celebrate Life” is the first look. Read the rest of this entry »

On My Philly Sh*t x Young Chris – Philly Sh*t

Posted by Mr. Put On on October 18, 2010

It’s no secret that ever since I came back to the tri-state I’ve spent a large majority of time in Philly, partying, promoting, planning, hanging, etc. The culture of Philadelphia, as is the culture of any other major city in the world, has its own flavor and completely different feel. Most people think, “oh yeah, Philly” as though it’s just over there in PA, doing its own thing and when they get to it, they get to it. The important thing is, when they get to it…. Marsha Ambrosius And Her Ballad Of Hope

Posted by J. Tinsley on October 11, 2010

Realistically, Late Nights & Early Mornings is looking like it will not see the light of day until early 2011. Not totally surprising given the way projects and release dates very rarely see eye to eye in current times. Still, as long as Marsha continues to release quality music every so often, all is well.

Earlier this summer, Miss Ambrosius liberated her scorned anthem “I Hope She Cheats.” A few eyebrows were raised, some comments were said, yet overall most people consider it another quality notch on her catalog. Pending you follow her on Twitter, then you already know she’s been eagerly alluding to the ballad version of the record. For good reason, too.

I’ve always imagined Marsha as this singer you’d see in a dimly lit jazz lounge entertaining those in attendance who seek refuge from a rainstorm outside. “ Read the rest of this entry »

Downloads: KiD CuDi Feat. Cage – “Maniac”

Posted by J. Tinsley on October 11, 2010

G.O.O.D. has been on fire for the past few months, both on and off the mic. Sean dropped a dope tape. The roster continues to get stronger. Charlie Wilson is singing his heart out with every opportunity. Kanye’s being Kanye. But it’s KiD CuDi who may be the most intriguing as of late. Given his recent actions, this may be the most aptly titled song in recent memory.

“Maniac” is a previously never before heard track which finds Cudder and Cage taking full advantage of a spaced out instrumental. A cool record, indeed, but it seems like one of those songs that’s meant to be listened to under the influence of something. Then again, that’s not to say taking 10 Excedrins and pressing play is exactly the best option.

Since the topic of G.O.O.D. Music is in the air though, some new Common would be dope.

Drake – “I Get Lonely Too”

Posted by J. Tinsley on October 5, 2010

So you won’t go around looking foolish, this is a cover of TLC’s “Fan Mail.” Regardless, it serves as Drake’s lead single for his R&B mixtape It’s Never Enough and as the official anthem for many who will be running solo this winter.

And I’ll say it – this is pretty good. He’s not the next coming of Marvin Gaye by any stretch of the imagination, but the track is worthy of a handful of spins in its own right with signature production from 40.

Young Jeezy – “The Last Laugh” (Mixtape)

Posted by Oak Jones on September 29, 2010

Taking a hiatus from the music scene is considered a double-edged sword. On one end, being out of the public eye creates a certain anticipation from one’s fans; it also gives the artist more time to work on their respective album or craft; because as the old saying goes: “absence makes the heart grow fonder”… right? On the other hand, with the genre of hip-hop always changing and progressing, a long break could ultimately hurt, if not end, an artist’s career; talented or not. One tactic that most successful rappers is the method of being featured on other artists singles and albums, while still working on their own respective albums. Read the rest of this entry »

Smokin’ Dro Week 4 – “You Know What It Is”

Posted by J. Tinsley on September 27, 2010

The tape with Greg Street was enough Dro for one week. Now we’re back like a nagging ex, so put the USPA down for a moment. Leaving the A, this week we head up North to reminisce when Dro broke bread with the man who has more facts than Chuck Norris.

Joell Ortiz Is In A “F*ck You” Mindset

Posted by J. Tinsley on September 25, 2010

It may be early, but I’m almost positive I will never get tired of this song. It’s crazy because I know the reaction following the release was crazy and overwhelmingly popular, but I feel it should be more. I could be tripping, but whatever. The record is such classic Cee-Lo and it feels good to listen to even if your significant other hasn’t pissed you off for the last time.

Joell Ortiz is the second rapper (50 was the first, if you’ve been living under a rock) to put his own personal spin on the anthem. If you’re a Joell fan, you already know dude’s track record and this only adds to his resume. The man who should be a bigger artist than what he is right now waxes his frustrations with the opposite sex all in the honor of Cooper Projects. Be sure to check out his Farewell Summer EP if you have yet to do so. It’s worth the price of admission download.
