Music Review: Wale – More About Nothing (Mixtape)

Posted by Oak Jones on August 19, 2010

It’s both a burden and an honor to be the representative of an entire group of people. It’s considered a position of power… but with great power, comes great responsibility. Olubowale Folarin, more commonly known as Wale, is the first real hip-hop artist to make it out of the trenches of Washington, D.C. His metaphors, wordplay and rhyme scheme is something that he can honestly call his own, which is atypical of most rappers today. Ever since being nominated for XXL‘s ’09 class of the Freshman 10, he has not only been on a serious grind, but has remained consistent every step of the way. On August 3rd, in collaboration with Roc Nation x DJ Omega x The Board Administration, he released the sequel to his Mixtape About Nothing, aptly titled: More About Nothing.

The second installment of the More… series follows the pattern of love and life, but the variety of musical selections makes the mixtape both cohesive and eclectic at the same time. The disc contains 21 tracks, with most of them having samples from the popular 90’s sitcom, in which the cover pays homage to. The introductory cut entitled “The Problem”, Mr. No Days Off narrates over the melodic backdrop of a piano; the perfect way to open up the album the he proclaims to be about… nothing. However, the concepts on this mixtape is unlike much that has been heard within the past few years. The intro, outro and the popular “Ambitious Girl” are just some examples of the title artist showcasing his poetic prowess, while “The Work” and “The MC” show his listeners that lyrically he has not lost a step.

Nearly all of the songs off of More About Nothing are enjoyable, one of the standouts would be “The Manipulation Pt. 2”, where we are brought into the mind of a male; pre and post sex. It definitely makes one think, whether it be positive or negative. “The Eye Of The Tiger” is a track that is quite clever, but in the same breath, quite humorous. Either way, the title fits the song and I’ll let you all be the judge. The tape features artists such as Wiz Khalifa, Avery Storm, Waka Flocka and Roscoe Dash, just to name a few. Production credits go to a plethora of beat makers, but don’t panic, I’ve included the back cover below which has a list of everyone who appears on the disc.

All in all, More About Nothing is a great mixtape that has a little something for everyone. It’s interesting to see the viewpoint of love and life through Wale’s eyes and in listening to his narratives, its safe to say the we can all relate one way or another. If you haven’t heard it yet, shame on you… but since the download link is but a click away, now you don’t have any excuse.
