This One’s For the Cool: Kendrick Lamar “Growing Apart”

Posted by T. Adeyemi on July 19, 2010

Some music just has a way of putting you in the right mood. No, not that ready to party mood, or the I’m ready to you know what mood. No, I mean the feeling you get when you’ve pressed play and the world around you falls on deaf ears and everything seems to slow down. Such a feeling of an atmosphere where emotion trumps material things and where soothing overtakes sensuality.

Now, I don’t know if Kendrick Lamar thought he was that deep when he recorded this track, but there is a certain aura established from the moment the chords caress the bass line. Credit Tae Beast for the feel on the beat. But it seems the calming voice of Jhene Aiko provide the balance for the track’s subtle seperation. The Compton native has always had a smooth delivery, but this track seems to expand on a place he’s been reaching for.

Don’t get it twisted, he’s not your average conscious rapper. Instead in his own words he says he makes, “Human Music.” Even further Lamar has always stated that he makes his music in order to be related too,

“What is a person without people actually relating to him? What is Pac without people actually knowing his story, and knowing who he is as a person, not just as a rapper? I think that’s wack that people are straying away from that.”

I couldn’t agree more Sir. Download the cool breeze that is “Growing Apart.” If this is your first experience with Kendrick, download the self-titled Kendrick Lamar EP that he dropped on New Year’s Eve. Be on the look out for his album OD to drop later this year.
