ABC’s Martin Bashir Interviews Diddy on “Being Diddy”

Posted by T. Adeyemi on June 15, 2010

The man, the legend, and certainly far  from a myth, Diddy has become the ultimate sense of what a mogul is over his some twenty odd year career. I for a long time have proclaimed to my friends & colleagues that NO ONE is as influential as Diddy. Yes, I said it. And for the record I do not mean just in the sense of Hip Hop culture. Diddy’s journey from Uptown Records intern to a man who owns a piece of almost everything when it comes to living a Hip Hop lifestyle has been nothing short of remarkable. Now, I’m not going to comb through his bio just to reinforce all the milestones and accolades that Diddy has achieved, there’s Wikipedia for that. Instead, I just encourage you to realize three things about Mr. Sean Combs.

The first about Diddy that is extraordinary is he unlike any other artists outside of Jay-Z can remain immensely relevant without the presence of an album, or any new music for that matter. Point being, is it even politically correct to label Diddy as an artist still? I say no, because even though his empire is music based; his reach spans far beyond the music business.

This is no more evident than the fact that Diddy has remained in the forefront of the public eye amidst a four-year layoff from his last album. Who else do you know can do that? The answer is nobody (referencing Nelly’s career as a prime example.) Many other Hip Hop musical artists have attempted to expand their territory beyond just the art of creating music and have failed. The majority of artists transitioning to the business world have seen short-lived success that parallels with their musical career. Only a handful have actually found some staying power in their businesses that outlast their original career…R.I.P. Jimmy Dean.

Another aspect of Diddy that furthers the gap between him and all his contemporaries is what I like to call “The Crossover Effect.” Diddy unlike anyone before him, and possibly after him has garnered the ability to crossover not only musically but also socially. It should be seen as nothing less than amazing that on Monday you can see “Sean Combs” at a press conference to commemorate his clothing label Sean John’s new deal with Macy’s as an exclusive dealer. Then Wednesday you will find “Diddy” on the set of his new music video with Dirty Money. Later in the week you could find Diddy at a banquet disguised as “Ciroc Obama” accepting awards for his premium vodka. And yet, that very evening who would be surprised to find Diddy in the slums of Atlanta filming his now infamous remix verse to “O Let’s Do It.”

“I got my billions up f*ckin’ with them White folks/Now I don’t give a f*ck ’cause I’m richer than them White folks.”

The point is, Diddy is without a doubt universally accepted. Sold out club appearances all the way to appearances on Good Morning America to promote his brands. Diddy for that reason will always be relevant because like it or not you either wear his cloths, use his cologne, listen to his music, or more recently you drink his liquor.

Lastly, the thing about Diddy that separates him from all the rest is not his great business savvy, nor his ability to promote any product or event known to man. Instead, it is his willingness to sacrifice. Beginning with his decision to essentially dropout of college to go work Pro bono at Uptown Records leading up to the present where as he mentions in the interview that he has even sacrificed sleep due to his immense responsibilities. The time and effort it takes to run his empire has even forced him to sacrifice time with his six children. Diddy will surely look back one day and realize that he has accomplished much and earned plenty of money while giving up what has an immeasurable cost, time.

  2. Undeniably believe that which you said. Your favourite
justification seemed to be at the internet the easiest thing to be aware of.
I say to you, I certainly get irked while other people think about worries that they just
do not recognize about. You managed to hit the nail upon the top and outlined out the entire thing without having side-effects , other folks could take a signal.
Will likely be back to get more. Thank you
