Review: Joe Scudda – Not Your Average Joe EP

Posted by Okla Jones on March 4, 2010

Well… ladies and gentleman, the infamous Joe Scudda decided to drop Not Your Average Joe a couple of weeks ago, courtesy of Hall of Justus x The Smoking Section. He is a very talented lyricist, and frankly the EP speaks for itself. The mixing rights go to Statik Selektah on this one, with features from XXL’s Freshman 10 for ’10 nominee Freddie Gibbs, as well as Naledge, Mistah Fab, Evidence, Carlitta Durand, and Diz Gibran. Some of the scores were provided by producers such as Aurelius, S-Type, and Merlin, just to name a few.

The album in question was one of the most cohesive and versatile mixtapes I’ve heard a long while. The introductory track is a skit about how the public frowns upon uniqueness, originality, as well as anything that goes outside the box of normal standards… and it really makes you think. Anyway, Joe holds a similar rap style to his Carolina brethren Little Brother, while also distancing himself from them altogether. On the Khrysis produced track, “Bubblegum Tuna” he spits:

“Cause I run through teams, and I run through crews/ So it’d be a walk in the park for me to run through you/ With your lil’ raps and lil’ cheese/ You don’t pose no threats, I been running through cats like you since little league”

While most mixtapes in today’s watered down music industry focuses on just rapping over any beat with no substance at all, the narrative “Robert Downey, Jr” and introspective tracks like “$ Don’t Change Me” and “Think About It” ft. Evidence, shows that the Scuddaman is an MC of a different quality, and should definitely be taken seriously. The remix to “Trunk Rattle” is a certified head knocker, and should always be played with the volume on the highest level possible (unless you have JL’s, because that would be just plain stupid…) In conclusion, Not Your Average Joe is a great mixtape, put together by a great artist…

…and don’t you guys worry, if you haven’t heard it already, I’ve added the link below.
