“May the best man win…”

Posted by Okla Jones on December 9, 2009

December 8, 2009. Call it coincidence, but it has proved to be a huge day for the genres of R&B/HipHop, and frankly… for black music in general. It marks the return of Chris Brown, his first studio release since his highly publicized incident with Rihanna; with the debut of Graffiti. Virginia’s own, The Clipse, whom have always had a strong following, drops their third official album on Star Trak, ‘Til The Casket Drops. The highly anticipated The State vs. Radric Davis, Gucci Mane’s second studio release, drops after a boatload of independent releases, mixtapes and features over the past few years. A consistent favorite with listeners of all ages, races and gender, Snoop Dogg, also unveils Malice ‘N Wonderland… The incomparable beat-maker, Timbaland, releases the second of his Shock Value series, Shock Value II. New Orleans native, B.G. keeps it real with Too Hood For Hollywood, his final album on Atlantic Records. Finally, for all you Neo-Soul lovers, Maxwell is as well releasing a little three-track remix CD for his loyal listeners entitled Bad Habits, just to give you guys a fix before his next album.

December 8th made the choices endless; and any listener can have the opportunity to quench their thirst. R & B or Rap?… Dirty South or West Coast? Neo-Soul or Pop? The choices we have to make in a recession, right? While each of these releases are very good listens in their own right, the one you choose (if not all), will depend mostly on your music preference or your loyalty. With some SoundsScan powerhouses, as well as fan favorites, dropping their CD on 12.8, this week’s album sales battle is going to be very interesting to watch… But perhaps the outcome will hold much more surprise. While each record proves to hold it’s own, but due to the events of some of these artists (both in and out of the studio), it makes this Tuesday particularly special to fans and haters alike. What I say to them all is: “May the best man win.” So people, don’t hurt yourself getting to the record store.
