"To you, Michael is an icon. To us, he is family."

By far the most emotional moment of the night was Janet Jackson’s minute long soliloquy regarding her older brother. Truthfully, I’m not even sure how she managed to say as much as she did considering the weight of sorrow that surely haunted her. Consequently, that same sorrow didn’t appear evident on the face of Papa Joe Jackson, but who am I to question the love a father has for his son? Even if it was well documented that their relationship was rocky at best and only four days after his son’s death he already promoting for his new business venture, Ranch Records. Whatever.

While I, along with millions of others, wanted a Chris Brown induced tribute, seeing Janet speak on her brother as a human as opposed to a mythical figure was by the highlight of the show (which had many, good and bad). Seeing as how she and Michael were the two most talented of the small village of Jacksons from Gary, Indiana, it’s only fitting that Janet somehow pulled this off. I remember seeing my mother speak on my uncle almost a decade ago after he lost his bout to cancer, and she too, like Janet, managed to get through the speech with no tears. It has always seemed as if she understood Michael the most and remained by his side through the thick and thin, which in essence is the epitome of a sibling relationship.

With that said, the thoughts and prayers of an entire world are with you Janet as well as anyone else who has lost someone recently. Pop culture icon or not.
