"BRO, YOU'RE MY WINGMAN…"

Posted by J. Tinsley on May 31, 2009

Chuckie Finster. Skreech. Scottie Pippen. Barry Bonds’ trainer. The guy who sits beside Jack Nicholson at EVERY Lakers game. Who are they?

I’ll tell you. Only some of the greatest “wingmen” of all time is what they are. However, all pale in comparison to one man, Luigi.

At some point in time, everyone wants to be “the man”, it’s only natural.  Apparently after years of playing the backburner to Mario’s star power (pun intended), Luigi finally snaps on his brother. During the early 1990’s, if you didn’t have (or knew someone) who owned a Nintendo, Mario and the Duck Hunt gun, chances are you probably don’t have many friends right now. Hopefully no one took offense to the last sentence (because it was merely a joke), but let’s be honest with ourselves here, a Nintendo was a status symbol.

And if you’ve never played Mario at least ONCE, consider yourself un-American and a failure to this generation. For everyone who has played the game, however, questions over Luigi’s role in the series was always in constant debate. Personally, Mario’s green brother was always cool in my book, and often times I chose to utilize his character as opposed to his brother. Not sound like a video game geek (because I’m far from it; I bought NBA 2K9 and only played it five times), but the green goblin (no Spiderman) was actually the better character on Mario Kart & Golf, at least in my opinion.

But all that frustration of being trapped in the shadows comes to a head in this clip. Fed up with the endorsements, groupie love and history associated with his shorter, older brother, Luigi let’s all of his anger out in this nearly three minute clip. The failed attempt at his own solo game on GameCube, to always “saving Mario’s girlfriend” and even to the supposed death of Yoshi are all addressed. Grab your tissues folks. This one’s a tear-jerker.

As the late, great Rodney Dangerfield once said…”No respect, I tell ya. No respect…”

Charles Hamilton even makes an appearance for a brief second at the 2:13 mark.
